Since 1962, when the world's first coiled tubing unit (CTU) came out, the number of this new type of operating equipment has doubled from the initial slow development. Figures show that in the mid-1970s, there were more than 200 CTUs in the world, including 561 in 1993, 850 in February 2001 and 1050 in January 2004. According to the latest statistics of the International Coiled Tubing Association and ICoTA in January 2010, there are 1778 CTUs in use worldwide (more than 50 in China), mainly distributed in North America, South America and Europe. Among them, coiled tubing is most widely used in North America, with annual consumption accounting for more than 60% of the world, with an annual growth rate of 10% to 15%. At present, Canada has 399 sets, accounting for 22% of the world total, and the United States has 444 sets, accounting for 25% of the world total. These coiled tubing operation equipment are mainly controlled by several major oil companies, including 170 sets of BJ Services, 171 sets of Halliburton and 259 sets of Schlumberger.
